The word ‘Namchi’ means sky high in Bhutia language. The town and district headquarters are located at an elevation of 5500 feet above sea level. The developing town of Namchi is one of the major tourist destinations of this district because of the beautiful view of the natural landscapes it provides.
According to the 2011 census, Namchi recorded a population of 12194. the male and female ratio is 52% to 48% and the literacy rate is 78%. There are a number of schools and colleges in Namchi like the Namchi Public School, Tendong Educational Institute among others.

- By Air: The Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to Namchi.
- By Rail: The nearest railway station is in New Jalpaiguri. Namchi is situated about 90 kms from New Jalpaiguri.
- By Road: Namchi is well connected by motorable roadways. One can get regular Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) buses which runs to and from namchi to other towns and also to Siliguri. There are also private taxis available regularly.
